Back on Track...

I know, I know...it's been quite awhile since my last post.  No excuses, but it is time to get back on track as there have been many, many changes that I want to make everyone aware of.  

First, there ARE jobs out there for those with the right skills and the ability to communicate their skills and knowledge.  Second, there is a new Lansing Community College Center for Workforce Transition program beginning later in November at Capital Area Michigan Works!. It is the Encore! Plus 50 Re-employment Strategies program.  To learn more about this program, join us for an Orientation session on Tuesday, November 13th from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. or, Tuesday, November 27th from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Capital Area Michigan Works! As Time Goes By.....

Okay, it HAS been awhile since my last post, and for that I am truly sorry.  But, this past year has been quite eventful and significant to me.  It has been a year of many new experiences and opportunities for growth.  So, with that in mind, I thought I would regroup, find a few minutes every week, and reignite the "Live From the CWT" blog!  So, here goes!

Later this week I will be presenting my monthly Plus 50 Jobs Connection Workshop at Capital Area Michigan Works!  This workshop is specifically designed for those experienced Job Seekers who are a bit overwhelmed by the job search market. 

First, things have changed a great deal since many of them were in the job market.  As well, the method for finding a job have significantly changed.  Resumes are even more critical than they were before...as are the job applications.  Many, many people (of all ages) are getting lost in the job application process; or, fail to realize what it truly is...an effective applicant screening tool (among other things).  Further, understanding WHAT to communicate is equally as important as the application itself.  Of the many individuals I have worked with, the ability to clearly articulate their skills/strengths seems to be one of the biggest barriers they have to overcome.

Further, the re-hiring rate for the Plus 50 unemployed/underemployed job seeker is low compared to other age groups.  This has created a whole new set of concerns that the older job seeker is experiencing in today's job market.  Some issue include self-worth, lack of skills, concern with age discrimination, loss of retirement savings, just to name a few.  While the Plus 50 Jobs Connection workshop does not address these issues, it is important to understand that feelings of low self esteem and diminished self-worth are very real.

The Plus 50 Jobs Connection Workshop will address the following:

• Resources for Job Search help
• Local labor market information
• An understanding of how to use our significant skills and knowledge to benefit our job search
• A very brief overview of the generational effect/impact in today's workplace

The FREE one and a half-hour long workshop begins at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17th at the Capital Area Michigan Works! Lansing Service Center.  Registration is not necessary, but the room does fill up quickly.  If you are struggling to get started in the job search, or are just starting out and want to know what is 'new', plan on joining us for what promises to be an informative afternoon.
 

LCC Presents, Sokojikara

I thought I'd give you a 'heads up' on a special one-day event being sponsored by Lansing Community College:  Sokojikara!

If you're wondering what the word means, well, Sokojikara symbolizes the power within oneself. The harnessing of this power helps to overcome challenges and provides courage to succeed against all odds as one transitions through the various stages of life.   Sokojikara can only be achieved through taking care of all aspects of oneself...mind, body, and spirit!

Event Details:

The event will be held at Lansing Community College's University Center, Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Featured Guest Speaker will be Jane Aldrich, WLNS TV 6 News Anchor.  She will be speaking on "The Power of Happiness."

Utility Worker Training Program Available!

Are you interested in becoming an Electrical/Utility Lineworker?  If so, know that there is a special program available through Capital Area Michigan Works! that could possibly pay for the tuition, fees and textbooks for the courses included in Lansing Community College's Electrical/Utility Lineworker Certificate program!

Capital Area Michigan Works! has partnered with Lansing Community College and the Workforce Development Agency State of Michigan to administer a U.S. Department of Energy grant designed to increase the pool of trained candidates available to enter Michigan's electrical utility workforce.

The  32-credit,16 month certificate program includes a rigid application process where individuals granted department approval must then attend mandatory program meetings, two-semesters of academic classes followed by a 9-week climbing school which will be conducted in Marshall, Michigan.  While there is no guarantee of job placement, successful completion of this training will prepare individuals to enter lineworker apprenticeships in utility companies as well as other occupations utilizing similar skills.  The next program begins this month with completion in July, 2013. 

If interested, attendance at a mandatory informational meeting will begin the process.  Information meeting dates are (must attend one meeting):
